Thank God for God

It has been 1 year 4 months I am into marriage life. We purposelu make it a habit to celebrate our month-versary since we dated, to remind ourselves that each month counts. Now that I look back, our we are so much better at being married in our 16th month compared to our 4th month. Maybe I can't really tell the difference between 16th month and 15th or 14th month, but over a longer period of time, the way we relate to each other is definitely improving.

Which is our expected result.

I've read countless relationship/marriage building articles and tried to absorb as much as I could before and after entering this holy union. But no kidding, theoretical knowledge can only bring you as far, while the practical experience being in the marriage is a whole new challenge on its own.

Not to downplay the challenge. Rough or not, the journey is incredibly rewarding. Emphasis on rewarding.

It is about having faith in your significant other, that he/she is out for your best interest. It isn't easy matter to completely trust a person 100% all out. That's where the challenge lies. Without 100% trust, frictions that come on daily basis can be aggravated by minor household disagreement. Add to that the combination of personal insecurities, different cultural upbringing, different family habit, etc.

It's also about having hope that things will always be better tomorrow. Or next month, or in the next few years. Life just works that way. Positive thinking does't only help you "feel" better, but it shapes your behavior, and thus, your future. Being hopelessly positive is not equal to being stupid, it is actually a great indicator of strength.

Lastly, most important point, it is about love. It takes a great deal amount of love to treat people nicely, day in day out, good mood bad mood, shiny days stormy nights, etc. It takes love to understand love. It take love to experience love given by others. It requires a heart full of love fo even understand the essence of love itself.

It is true that as humans it is impossible to give unconditional love, but with God in the equation, it is possible. You know why? Because God completely heal the cracks after conflicts. 100% scar free. It is God who is able to restore human's heart back to 100% brand new. He's the creator, afterall.

Who is like God of all the earth?

Who is the author of wisdom?

Who is the author of love?

I thank God there is God.

Attitude of The Excellent Servant

March 15th, 2015

Excellent attitude of a servant leaves a strong impression. Jesus wants each and everyone of us to adopt an attitude of servanthood, to humble ourselves and serve others with excellence.

We are called to serve one another.

How to serve well?

After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him. (John 13:5 NIV)

随后把水倒在盆里,就洗门徒的脚,并用自己所束的手巾擦干。 (约翰福音 13:5 CUNPSS-上帝)

Prior to this event, the disciples were arguing on who is the greatest among all. That question probably always linger in their minds. But see how Jesus responds to that, He humbled Himself to wash the disciples' feet.

1. To serve well, we have to be free. In freedom we are able to serve with a gladness of heart and unswerving determination. We aren't slaves to our pride. We are freed men, and we are free to serve God well. Not by force, not by obligation, but the love of God propels us to serve one another.

2. To serve well, we have to be faithful

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. (Luke 16:10 NIV)

Be the best and be faithful in what we do. No matter how small the tasks may seem, we mustn't slack off. God knows our capacity and He won't give more than what we can take. When we're being faithful in the little things, God sees and He will increase our territory little by little, according to our capacity.

No one from the east or the west or from the desert can exalt themselves. It is God who judges: He brings one down, he exalts another. (Psalm 75:6-7 NIV)

Promotion comes from God, not men. Maintain a humble heart and leave your feeling of entitlement behind. When we are being faithful and trustworthy, God honors us. Show Him that He can entrust us with His blessings.

3. To serve well, we have to be fruitful

“Again, it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted his wealth to them.

To one he gave five bags of gold, to another two bags, and to another one bag, each according to his ability. Then he went on his journey.

The man who had received five bags of gold went at once and put his money to work and gained five bags more.

So also, the one with two bags of gold gained two more. But the man who had received one bag went off, dug a hole in the ground and hid his master’s money.

“After a long time the master of those servants returned and settled accounts with them.

The man who had received five bags of gold brought the other five. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with five bags of gold. See, I have gained five more.’ “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

“The man with two bags of gold also came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘you entrusted me with two bags of gold; see, I have gained two more.’ “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!’

“Then the man who had received one bag of gold came. ‘Master,’ he said, ‘I knew that you are a hard man, harvesting where you have not sown and gathering where you have not scattered seed. So I was afraid and went out and hid your gold in the ground. See, here is what belongs to you.’

“His master replied, ‘You wicked, lazy servant! So you knew that I harvest where I have not sown and gather where I have not scattered seed? Well then, you should have put my money on deposit with the bankers, so that when I returned I would have received it back with interest. “

‘So take the bag of gold from him and give it to the one who has ten bags. For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ (Matthew 25:14-30 NIV)

Faithfulness in church doesnt mean we'll come to church sitting in the same seat for 30 years. No, being faithful means we are being fruitful in what we do. We are blessed to bless others around us. The heart of the Father is for us to multiply and bear good fruits from our work.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. (John 15:5 NIV)

Healthy tree doesnt need to struggle to produce good fruits. So are we healthy Christians. When we are close to God, His power and love will overflow in us and there is nothing to stop us from growing and producing healthy fruits.

It is just a natural side effect of walking with God. So relax, don't focus merely on the fruits. Focus on reaching out to God and understand His heart more. Grow your roots deeper and connect with God.

In summary, how are we able to serve well?
1. By realizing that we are free
2. Being faithful and trustworthy
3. Being fruitful, bearing good fruits from what's been entrusted to us

I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. (John 15:15 NIV)

Pursue God in our lives and understand the depth of His heart. Learn to see what He sees, feel what He feels, and say what He says. At the end of our earthly journey, we dream of God praising us for our good works and say, "Faithful servant, well done."

New Creation Church Singapore 1 March 2015 Sermon Summary: Road to Emmaus

Below is a recap/summary of Joseph Prince's sermon on the first sunday of March 2015. The theme for the whole year is The Year of Restoration, so let's keep reminding each other about God's supernatural strength that makes everything possible (when things are according to His will).

I love how pastor Prince dissects the verses and goes through them one by one, verses by verses. Just like a short session bible study class except it comes with a handsome charming guy on the stage and funny sarcastic jokes about things.

Most of all, please enjoy this perspective on Road to Emmaus, inbetween Jesus' resurrection and ascension to heaven :)

Revelations on the road of Emmaus
by Ps Joseph Prince, New Creation Church Singapore

Our biggest challenge on following God: either we're ignorant, or we're slow to believe.

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings. (Proverbs 25:2 NIV)

My son, pay attention to what I say; turn your ear to my words. Do not let them out of your sight, keep them within your heart; for they are life to those who find them and health to one’s whole body. (Proverbs 4:20-22 NIV)

On the first day of Jesus resurrection, He chose to appear to two persons in the road to Emmaus. Why didn't He choose to visit the 11 disciples first? Why the two? Let's dig deeper.

Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem. They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; but they were kept from recognizing him. (Luke 24:13-16 NIV)

What we know:
- There were two people walking.
- One of the name is Cleopas, no mention of the the other person's name
- No mention of the gender. We deduce the two are husband and wife. Thus the wife's name is omitted (in line with the Jewish custom)

In garden of eden, God walked together with two humans. Adam and Eve. It was an intimate communion, when God and humans always converse with each other in a dear way. In the road to Emmaus, God walked again with two, Cleopas and wife.

V13 The village of Emmaus are surrounded with plenty of warm baths. The baths are relaxing. They bring peace and relieve tensions in the body

V14 The two were communing about events surrounding Jesus crucifixion and the turmoil among Christians

V15 Whenever we are meditating about God's words, even if we do not understand what we are discussing about, Jesus Himself will draw near. Not the angels, not any messengers, but Jesus Himself will come to us.

V16. The eyes of the two were restrained. God knows that appearing His nailpierced hands won't produce faith to the faithless. When we don't understand things that happen in our lives, we ought to ask God: why are our eyes restrained?

He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?” They stood still, their faces downcast. One of them, named Cleopas, asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” “What things?” he asked. “About Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. “He was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel. And what is more, it is the third day since all this took place. In addition, some of our women amazed us. They went to the tomb early this morning but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.” (Luke 24:17-24 NIV)

V25 The first is: the word foolish one (no understanding) is different from the word fool Jesus often told the Pharisees (Greek: moros, harsher in degree). Second, slow to believe (dull/lazy in mind). God's words won't only minister to our physical health, but also work miracles in our intellects. The words transform our minds to become sharper and quicker-restoration of the mind and body

V26 Some people refer Jesus as the prophet, or the teacher. But Jesus refers Himself as the Christ (the Messiah, the Annointed One).

V27 Jesus patiently went through all the trouble to explain the relevance of the crucifixion to fulfill the prophecy about His coming and going written in the Scriptures, beginning with the Moses and all the Prophets.

V28 Jesus indicated that He would have gone further with the walk and the sharing. But perhaps, they had arrived in the village.

V29 unlike our modern day custom, the Jewish calendar starts the day from the evening, after 6pm.

V30 He took the bread, blessed it and gave it to the two. No mention of the cup and wine. But they were communing.

V31 after they ate the bread, they knew Him (epiginosco: complete). Their eyes were opened, then Jesus vanished from their sight. Mission accomplished!

In garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve ate the fruit from the tree of life,  the two eyes were opened, they knew their nakedness. Condemnation and judgment for all mankind then follow.

Bread of communion = Jesus = The tree of life

V32 their heart are burning. First point: Heart (Greek: singular). Why not plural hearts?

When you have communion with people, you will be singular. For Christian couples, you will have one heart, not hearts. Bonding doesn't happen by talking to each other about each other, no, you'll quarrel more. Bonding happens when spouses talk about the Lord. Communion brings Jesus Himself to draw near.

Second point: in garden of Eden, God walked with two, and after the two ate the fruit from tree of life and knew their nakedness, fear came. After the resurrection, God walked again with two, and after the two ate the bread and knew Jesus, restoration comes. The heart is burning with love.

I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” (John 6:48-51 NIV)

Everytime we take the bread, we receive life and restoration.

They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread. While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” (Luke 24:33-36 NIV)

V36 again, Jesus comes near when we are talking ie communing about Him.

The bread is the tree of life. That's why we ought to expound things concerning God: to draw Him near, to bring unity as one heart, to bring peace. Receive life from Jesus and give life to each other. Ask God to restore.

In God We Trust. What Can People Do to Us?

This is the bible verse that came out of the Holy Bible daily devotion for today. Hope it can be a blessing to you :)

Let's not fear anything or anyone other than the Lord, our God our Creator. You may have:
1. Enemy outside, in the sense of people who scheme and plot against you, badmouth or continuously put great effort to bring discredit to you)

2. Enemy inside. The greatest enemy of ourselves in a lifetime. There can be voices roaming inside that say you aren't worthy to be loved, you aren't deserving to be successful, or that you are stupid and can't be respected, etc. Put it simply: All trash talk.

Yes, your mind can trash talk to you, just like mine can, and the whole universe of mind can. Know the truth: God's words bring peace, joy, and a sense of warmth. If God's words rebuke you, you'll feel stabbed/ashamed for a while because God's words bring light to reveal your error, which brings a following repentance/apology to God. But you will never lose that peace.

Fight the lies with the truth, which is God's words. Do not be deceived by 'enemies'. May the verse bring peace and encouragement to your current fear :)

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? (Psalm 56:3-4 NIV)

我惧怕的时候要倚靠你。 我倚靠上帝,我要赞美他的话; 我倚靠上帝,必不惧怕。 血气之辈能把我怎么样呢? (诗篇 56:3-4 CUNPSS-上帝)

惧怕 fear
倚靠 lean on
赞美 praise
血气 mortal
辈儿 a lifetime
